Decided to run down the hill to join a local protest for an hour.
Seven dedicated citizens were exercising their right to free speech.
I brought peanut butter chip cookies because protesting is hungry sort of work and I will bake for anyone who likes sweets.
Nice people.
They ate my cookies.
Made me happy.
Revising a conference proceedings paper (from over a year ago...) and when I submitted it there were fewer than 8,500 Starlink satellites in orbit, out of about 12,500 total satellites.
Today there are 11,102 Starlinks out of 16,978 total active satellites. Fuck.
ICE has been forced to withdraw many subpoenas seeking social media user data. We're keeping track. https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2026/08/list-ice-subpoenas-tech-companies
I finally listened to this talk from Andrew Kelley, "Don't Take the Black Pill". It doesn't solve all the problems of the world or anything, but it's perhaps worth a listen if you are a person who uses too many computers and could use a hopeful message today:
@cstanhope Thanks, I re-listened and it was worth it. Might have to check in with this regularly for a while.
Would an EU politician please tell me why I — as an EU citizen — have to see unconventional, politicized place names dictated by Trump in both Google Maps and Apple Maps on an iPhone bought in the EU?
Are the European countries still sovereign states or have we somehow become vassal states of The Kingdom of Trumpistan?
@randahl
This has nothing to with the EU. This has everything to do with Google Maps and Apple Maps. They have a shown you who they are.
Looks like so far we won’t have to ship age declaration crap in OS 9 🎉 https://www.tomshardware.com/software/linux/california-lawmakers-unanimously-pass-linux-exemption-from-age-verification-law-software-distributed-under-the-gpl-mit-bsd-and-apache-licenses-are-exempt
Oh yeah shouldn't be too hard to use tech without supporting bad actors. Just gotta replace my phone, my phone OS, my phone keyboard, my desktop OS, my work OS, my email, my code editor, my cloud backup, my office software, my maps app, my source hosting, my image editor, my
@franksting @phocks having this problem with clothes and other things to be stored in my new bedroom. Main reason the kitchen was easy despite being massively smaller is that I left most of what I had at the old place, so not much to store. Whereas I brought all my clothes and now don’t have enough cupboards to put them in.
@emmadavidson @phocks yes. My wardrobe is half the size as previously. My previous one was double the size for the depressingly obvious reasons

Straps coach put on the soundtrack to the Rocky Horror Picture Show during training today and everyone in the gym knew the words. Circus aerialists are just theater kids with biceps.
@evacide ..... Aerialist is a discipline of a theatrical art. They are theatre kids.
It must be exhausting to be in the mafia
@TheBreadmonkey there’s SO much house cleaning when you’re a maid man
With Google Maps moving to "Lake America" for Lake Ontario, it should bring serious doubt to the already dubious information coming out of Google Gemini. Since Apple is powering Apple Intelligence with Google Gemini, that leads me to further question accuracy from Apple Intelligence.
If you haven't educated yourself around Linux, you should start looking in that direction.
Also, dump LLMs.

@adamgreenfield I'm re-reading the much more lowbrow "A Spectre is Haunting Texas" by Fritz Leiber. Fun but hardly profound. You have inspired me, I need to read more Le Guin again too.
@bencourtice Nothing wrong with Leiber!
Any Canadian business that uses embedded Google Maps maps had better reconsider that right now. https://globalnews.ca/news/12041171/google-maps-lake-america-ontario-government-websites/
"Stephen Crawford, minister of public and business service delivery and procurement, said
*on X*
that some of the websites pull map data directly from Google Maps."
I wonder if there's some sort of philosophy about how governments use technology that made this outcome possible 🤔
@rakslice the Google maps app shows the fash name
@thomasfuchs ah, so it's geofenced
"AI helps with my disability"
AI *causes* disability. But that's in poor black kids, and fuck them, right?
